GLiMMER: Global Lifestyle Medicine Mobilizing to Effect Reform

Fully 80% of all chronic disease and associated premature death around the world is preventable with uncontroversial knowledge we already have.  However, most people simply don’t know that we know what we know; that we already know enough to add a bounty of years to lives, a bounty of life to years, bequeathing a vastly better medical destiny to our children. Because people don’t know, they are vulnerable to every glossy alternative, false promise, fad, and manipulation—squandering with each delay one of the greatest opportunities in the history of public health.  Fixing this changes everything.

Unless this is fixed, over 100 million Americans will be diabetic by mid-century.  Rates of Alzheimer’s Dementia will climb inexorably.  Every year we delay, we submit unnecessarily to chronic disease, premature death, and associated costs.  We are paying for the failure to turn what we know into what we do with a monumental, perennial loss of life from years, and years from life—and by mortgaging the future health of our children. This must be fixed.

Remember E.F. Hutton?  When “EF Hutton talks, people listen.”  Imagine a global voice devoted to—and only to—disseminating and applying what we know for sure about health promotion and disease prevention so authoritative, that everyone stops to listen.  Imagine that singularly authoritative voice establishing for chronic disease prevention a mandate as clear and actionable as the campaign that led to the global eradication of smallpox.

Why Now?

If not us, who? If not now, when?
There is so much “static” regarding health promotion/disease prevention in modern culture that it entirely obscures the true signal.  There are so many competing agendas and motivations that simple, actionable, and crucial decisions required by society are not apparent, let alone robustly supported with clear and compelling consensus-based arguments.

Distortions and distractions include marketing manipulations (e.g., the engineering of willfully ‘addictive’ junk food;’ the contention that multicolored marshmallows are part of a ‘complete breakfast,’ etc.); profit-driven variability in health related information in publishing and the media; and the tendency for health experts to emphasize their particular narrow focus, rather than the vast expanse of common ground.  Collectively, these preclude the public at large from knowing the truth about the luminous potential of lifestyle as medicine, and from acting on that truth

A global coalition of the world’s leading authorities and organizations in health-related fields (e.g., lifestyle medicine, preventive medicine, public health, health journalism, environmentalism, sustainable agriculture, conservation, nutrition, health care, etc.), convened by widely respected leaders of global renown, committed at inception to speaking with one voice to propagate universal knowledge of the common core elements of lifestyle as medicine and their capacity to prevent disease, forestall premature death, add years to life, and add life to years.  A “signal” to trump the prevailing static; a global voice so authoritative, and representing such diverse expertise, that it becomes the go-to reality check for all pop culture/mass media claims about lifestyle and health.

This coalition, convened and orchestrated by a dedicated , Council of Directors will not only represent a global who’s who in modern public health, but will expressly include diverse perspectives (e.g., lifestyle elements most important for health promotion; lifestyle elements most impactful on the environment/climate) and seemingly dissenting voices (e.g., advocates of vegan diets and advocates of Paleo diets) to demonstrate the magnitude of global consensus about the fundamentals, and abolish the prevailing tendency to form competing factions that obviate collective action.

Dan Buettner,
Founder & CEO of Blue Zones®

An explorer, New York Times bestselling author and National Geographic Fellow, Dan founded Blue Zones®, a company that puts the world’s best practices in longevity and well-being to work in people’s lives. His books The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest and Thrive: Finding Happiness the Blue Zones Way appeared on many best seller lists and both continue to be featured in national and international media.

Buettner’s colossal research effort on happiness has found four locations around the world with the highest reported well-being. In the societies he visits, it’s no coincidence that the way people interact with each other, shed stress, nourish their bodies, and view their world yields more happiness and good years of life.

In 2009, Dan and his partner, AARP, applied principles of The Blue Zones to Albert Lea, Minnesota and successfully raised well-being and lowered health care costs by some 40%. He’s currently working with Healthways to implement the program in there Beach Cities of Los Angeles; Fort Worth, Texas; Kauai, Hawaii; and the entire state of Iowa. Their strategy focuses on optimizing the health environment instead of individual behavior change. Writing in Newsweek, Harvard University’s Walter Willet called the results “stunning.”

Dan also holds three world records in distance cycling and has won an Emmy Award for television production.

Identifying and eradicating the cause of disease—this is the passion shared by members of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) and why ACLM is proud to assist in the launch of the GLiMMER Initiative and its True Health Coalition.

With 80% or more of our nation’s healthcare costs spent on the treatment of conditions that are directly tied to poor lifestyle choices, it’s clear that Lifestyle Medicine must become the foundation of a transformed and sustainable healthcare system.

ACLM is the nation’s premier professional medical association dedicated to the advancement of Lifestyle Medicine and quality patient care by providing continuing medical education, practice knowledge and research information.

Lifestyle Medicine is a branch of evidence-based medicine in which comprehensive lifestyle changes (including nutrition, physical activity, stress management, social support and environmental exposures) are used to help prevent, treat and even reverse the progression of many chronic diseases by addressing their underlying causes.

Your membership counts! Visit lifestylemedicines2015.org , and join other physicians, clinicians and allied health professionals who are dedicated to the use of lifestyle as a therapeutic intervention for the prevention and, more importantly, the treatment of disease.
